Cookie policy

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep. Some are the only way a site can work at all — without one, signing in would not survive you clicking a link. Others are there to measure or to advertise, and those are a choice.

Below is what we and the services we use put on your device, grouped by what it is for. Nothing in the optional categories is switched on until you say so, and you can change your mind at any time.

Cookies are named individually. Alongside them, both we and our sign-in provider keep a small amount of data in your browser's own storage for the same purposes, which your browser clears with the cookies; turning off an optional category removes that too.

Your choices

This opens the same panel you saw when you first arrived, showing what is on right now.

Strictly necessary

Sign-in, payments, and remembering the choice you make on this panel.

Why these are required: These cannot be switched off. Without them you could not stay signed in, pay for a build, or have this page remember that you said no to everything else.

__session, __client_uatClerk (our sign-in provider) · Session, and up to 1 year

Keeps you signed in and tells the page which account you are. Clerk also sets short-lived cookies of its own while you are signing in.

vc_anonSpelt · 30 days

Lets you talk to Spelt before you have an account, and keeps that conversation attached to you rather than to everyone.

vc_pending_ideaSpelt · 30 minutes

Holds the idea you typed on the home page so it survives the trip through sign-in instead of being lost.

vc_signup_destSpelt · 30 minutes

Remembers which page to return you to after you sign in.

vc_refSpelt · 30 days

Carries the invite code from a link a friend sent you, so the credit they are owed still arrives after you sign up.

vc_onepagerSpelt · 30 days

Remembers that you entered the password for a password-protected page, so it does not ask on every visit.

vc_consentSpelt · 6 months

Your answer on this panel, so you are not asked again.

vc_welcome_seenSpelt · 6 months

Remembers you have closed the notice about our change of name, so it does not reappear on every page.

__stripe_mid, __stripe_sidStripe (our payment processor) · 30 minutes to 1 year

Runs the card form and spots fraudulent payments. Set only on the pages where you pay.

Preferences

Remembers which campaign brought you here, so an offer you came for is still there later.

If you turn this off: Nothing breaks, and you can still use everything. If you arrived through a campaign offering a free build, that offer will not be waiting for you when you come back later in the week: you would need to follow the same link again.

vc_free_buildSpelt · 30 days

Remembers you arrived from a campaign that offers a free build, so the offer is still there when you reach the end.

Analytics

How the site is used, so we can tell which parts work and which waste your time.

If you turn this off: Nothing breaks, and we still keep server-side records of things you do in your account (a build you started, a payment you made) because we need those to run the service. What stops is the behavioural measurement in your browser: which pages you looked at, in what order, and how far you got. Switching this off also stops the anonymous counting described below, which only runs while you have not answered.

ph_*_posthogPostHog · 1 year

Gives this browser an id and remembers the pages you visited, so a visit reads as one journey rather than a pile of unrelated hits.

vc_attrSpelt · 30 days

Records where you came from on your first visit (a search, a link, a social post), so we know which of those was worth doing.

Advertising

Lets Meta connect an ad you saw to what you did here. This is the one that leaves our site.

If you turn this off: Nothing breaks, and you will not see more or fewer ads. Meta is not told that this browser visited us or what it did, and no advertising identifier is stored on your device or sent from our servers.

_fbpMeta · 90 days

Identifies this browser to Meta.

_fbcMeta · 90 days

Records which ad click brought you here, when you arrived from one.

Before you answer

While you have not yet chosen, we count the visit in a way that puts nothing on your device at all: no cookie, no browser storage, nothing to delete. There is no identifier, so we cannot tell that it is you, recognise you on a later visit, or join this visit to anything else. Your IP address is discarded when the visit is recorded.

It tells us how many people came and which page or link they came from, and nothing about a person. If you turn Analytics off above, that stops too.

What we do not do

We do not sell your personal information. If you refuse the advertising category, no advertising identifier is stored on your device and nothing about your visit is sent to Meta from your browser or from our servers.

One thing worth being straight about, because most cookie pages are vague on it: we still keep server-side records of what happens in your account — a build you started, a payment you made, an error the site hit. That is how the product runs and how we bill correctly, it is not cookie-based, and it is covered by our privacy policy rather than by the choices on this page.

Third parties

Where a cookie above names a company other than us, that company sets it and its own policy applies: Clerk (sign-in), Stripe (payments), PostHog (analytics), and Meta (advertising).

Turning cookies off in your browser

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies from its settings, and that works regardless of anything on this page. Be aware that blocking all cookies will sign you out and will stop checkout working, because the strictly necessary ones go too.

Changes

If we add something that uses cookies, this page changes with it and we ask you again rather than assuming your previous answer covered it.
